Castlebar Celtic B1 Killala 5

Killala opened up a 5 point gap at the top of division 1 by virtue of this comfortable in Celtic Park on Sunday. Despite the scare of any early goal for the homeside Killala began to settle on the tight Astro turf pitch and were soon back in the game when McNulty headed home a Murray fee kick. Celtic appeals for what appeared to be a penalty were waved away and moments later Killala got their own penalty a Gallagher made no mistake and once the visitors were in front their was no looking back. A Murray free kick and another by Gallagher made it 4-1 at halftime. Kevin Murray struck another free kick in the secondhalf to kill off the game but McNulty and Gallagher had further chances but all were scorned .Team. Killala 5 Manulla B1

It was hard to get back to business after the weekends Cup Final disappointment
but the lads knew 3 points would put them clear at the top and they started in whirlwind fashion. They went two up after 15 minutes through Rory Gallagher & Johnny McNulty and should have been out of sight when Manulla pulled one back from the spot, but poor finishing let them down. Gallagher restored the margin when he scored a wonderful goal from a Marc McDonnell through ball just before the break. The Second half was all Killala and Gallagher completed his hatrick and another strike from McNulty sealed the visitors fate Team.Killala: S. McHale, M. Webb, D. Cadden, K Murray , O. Clarke, J. No sudden death for Villa

Final
Moy Villa 1
Melia 24
Killala 1
Clarke 82

(AET, Moy Villa won 8-7 on penalties)

Daniel Carey
Milebush Park

AFTER 110 minutes, it took 16 penalties to separate Moy Villa and Killala before the Attymass side prevailed at Milebush Park, Castlebar last Sunday.
Actually, that’s not strictly true. The eventual winners took the lead after 24 minutes, and looked to be heading for victory before conceding the equaliser seven minutes from time. After 15 successful penalties, Villa’s Eugene Carlin saved Marc McDonnell’s kick, and was quickly swamped by ecstatic team-mates.
Both sides had one decent chance apiece before the opening goal. Keith Melia’s inswinging corner forced Killala goalkeeper Seán McHale to claw the ball out. McHale’s opposite number Eugene Carlin raced from goal and got to the ball ahead of Killala’s David Lowther, but John Clarke, following up, had a chance to score, but shot wide.
Villa took the lead following a great cross from Momme Reibisch from the right, which Keith Melia headed home. Killala almost got an instant equaliser, but Carlin brought off a stunning save from Johnny McNulty’s volley, and John Judge cleared the ball off the line from the resulting corner.
There were further goal chances before half time. Stephen Moyles’s curling shot went out for a Villa corner, while John Durkan forced a decent save from McHale. At the other end, McNulty’s sweet pass found Alan Murphy, whose ball from the right found Lowther. The midfielder shot wide from close range, but was flagged offside in any event. McNulty was taken down just outside the box in the run-up to half time, but it was still 1-0 at the interval.
A second goal would have given Villa daylight, but Durkan was thwarted in his efforts to get it after latching onto a throw, as McHale tipped the ball out for a corner. On the hour mark, Lowther headed just wide from a corner by Rory Gallagher, whose number 10 shirt was sported at least five other Killala people at Milebush Park.
Seven minutes before the end, Eugene Carlin was penalised after assistant referee Aidan Nevin ruled that he had taken the ball outside the penalty area with his hand. John Clarke’s free kick took a deflection and ended up in the net. Suddenly, we were facing the prospect of extra time in a divisional final for the third week in a row.
But sides had one-on-ones during the additional period. Durkan’s through ball found Kevin Langdon, who was denied by a superb McHale stop. At the other end, McNulty slipped the ball over Carlin but it drifted agonisingly wide.
And so, penalties were required, preceded by a mass movement of spectators towards the town end once it became clear where the shoot-out would take place. Villa quintet John Moyles, John Durkan, Keith Moran, John Judge and man of the match John Casey all converted their spot-kicks, as did Killala’s initial five takers – Rory Gallagher, Johnny McNulty, Alan Murphy, John Clarke and Kevin Murray.
That meant sudden death, and there was still no separating them after Villa pair Tommy Humber and Kevin Langdon, and Killala subs Brendan Ryan and Ian McNulty, all made no mistake. Momme Reibisch put Villa back in front, although Seán McHale got a hand to his penalty, and it went off the crossbar. Marc McDonnell had to score to keep Killala in the tie, but Eugene Carlin made a fine stop, and all heaven broke loose for the eight-year-old club by the river.

Brave Killala Girls Miss out on Glory

MANULLA 3 KILLALA 2
MANULLA were on the right end of an entertaining five goal contest at Milebush Park on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Hannah Flatley, two, and Emer Gilligan, proving the difference between the sides.

To their credit, Killala never gave up the battle, despite being three goals in arrears at the break, and no doubt the Yellow and Blue will be in another final in the not too distant future.

Despite the windy conditions at Milebush Park, Manulla began the game in positive fashion and just one minute into proceedings, they pinched the lead. Following some neat build-up play, Hannah Flatley won possession and she finished with some skill past Emma Munnelly.

Four minutes later, a cross from Megan Costello found Flatley but this time her header was saved by Munnelly.

Flatley was in inspired form and moments later, she was most unlucky to see her drive whistle inches wide.

Killala began to move the ball around the park with greater purpose as the half progressed and after some great work from Alison Munnelly, Ashling O’Donnell just missed out on guiding the former’s cross to the back of the net.

Manulla were wary of a Killala revival and on 14 minutes, Joe King’s troops added a second goal. A delightful through ball from Costello, released Emer Gilligan and after controlling possession, she unleashed an unstoppable effort beyond the reach of Emma Munnelly.

On 15 minutes, Manulla appeared to be out of sight, as they netted their third goal of the afternoon, courtesy of Flatley, who made a weaving run before applying a splendid finish.

Hannah Flatley almost completed a hat-trick shortly after, but this time her effort was thwarted by Emma Munnelly, with Flatley then seeing her rebound strike crash against the upright.

Manulla were eager to end the game as a contest and five minutes into the second half, they almost achieved that aim, but Chloe Tansey’s angled drive was thwarted by the alert Emma Munnelly.

As the half progressed, Killala upped the tempo and the coastal outfit went for broke. Alison Munnelly gave a busy display throughout this final and after making a neat run on 33 minutes (20 minutes per-half), she saw her strike hit the side-netting.

However, Killala did manage to peg a goal back on 37 minutes, courtesy of Collette Collins and this gave her team hope that all was not lost.

One minute later, Killala netted a second goal, as their captain Alison Munnelly’s sizzling strike hit the underside of the crossbar, before crossing the line, much to the delight of the Killala faithful.

During the dying embers of the game, Killala valiantly went in search of the leveller, but none was forthcoming, as Manulla held on to record the victory.

MANULLA: Jessica Nolan, Sinead Brennan, Chloe Durkan, Emer Gilligan, Megan Costello, Megan Staunton, Hannah Flatley. Subs: Lauren McLellan, Chloe Tansey, Kirsty Kelly.

KILLALA: Emma Munnelly, Alison Munnelly, Michelle Walker, Collette Collins, Niamh O’Donnell, Ashling O’Donnell, Caitlyn McLoughlin. Subs: Niamh Breslin, Ashling Bilbow, Rebecca Rooney, Shannon Cummins.

Goal-den Gallagher is spot on for cup chasers Killala
By Aoife Herbert

KILLALA 1  KNOCK/KILTIMAGH  Utd 0

AFTER what was a fairly evenly contested cup tie, Killala progressed to the final on the back of a victory sealed by Rory Gallagher’s penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Killala had been reduced to 10 men when Eamon Knox was shown a straight red card 10 minutes earlier, but to their credit they kept pushing purposefully forward and were rewarded for their efforts when Johnny McNulty was chopped down just inside the Kiltimagh penalty area. Gallagher made no mistake.

The visitors did have two particularly good chances to draw level following the Killala goal. A fizzing effort from Ciaran Jennings was tipped over the bar by Killala goalkeeper Sean McHale and in the dying moments a shot from winger Shane Prendergast was desperately cleared off the line by a barricade of Killala defenders.

Killala held on, and over the 90 minutes were the side that looked most likely to progress to the final. However, it was Kiltimagh who started the brighter of the teams in the first half. Liam Groarke, Johnny Mulroy and Shane Prendergast were lively in the opening exchanges and created a couple of early half chances between them.

Killala, though, found their rhythm 20 minutes into the first half. Alan Murphy had a snapshot gathered by the Kiltimagh goalkeeper Ryan Glynn before Marc McDonnell sent Rory Gallagher through on goal but his attempted chip saw Glynn scramble backwards and recover just in time to palm the ball away for a corner kick.

Johnny McNulty had another chance a minute later when the Kiltimagh defence was guilty of letting the ball bounce and the Killala front man was causing the Kiltimagh defence problems in the air too. From one such flick on, his strike partner Rory Gallagher smashed a shot off the post on 38 minutes.

Kiltimagh, as in the first half, started the second half enthusiastically and had held the balance of possession before Killala’s Johnny McNulty dragged a shot wide of the far post following good work by John Clarke in the centre of midfield. The game drifted into a stage where neither team could keep hold of possession for a decent amount of time and no clear cut chances materialised.

Killala lost their strong and imposing centre-back Eamon Knox to a straight red card in the 69th minute following an off the ball incident spotted by the referee. Kiltimagh immediately tried to pick gaps in a restructured Killala defence and Ciaran Jennings tried for goal with a header, but this apart Killala looked relatively comfortable and kicked forward with no apparent disadvantage.

The game finally increased in intensity during the final quarter. Rory Gallagher had a busy evening upfront for Killala and when some neat footwork by Johnny McNulty drew a rash tackle in the box, it was the former who stepped up to put away the penalty with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Kiltimagh fashioned two fantastic opportunities to equalise in the final stages but the Killala defence held firm and survived to record a well deserved win.

KILLALA: Sean McHale, Matt Webb, David Cadden, Eamon Knox, Ollie Clarke, John Clarke, Mark McDonnell, Kevin White. Rory Gallagher, Johnny McNulty. Alan Murphy.

KILTIMAGH: Ryan Glynn, Brendan Clarke, Brian Gallagher, Ciaran Jennings, Brian McDonagh, Tommy Prendergast, Shane Prendergast, Kieran McNicholas, Kevin O’Brien, Johnny Mulroy, Liam Goarke. Subs: John Gill (for Clarke 59), Gavin Goarke (for McDonagh 62), Michael Walsh (for Mulroy 73).

U-14 Boys Go Joint Top

By tdomf_d782a

The U-14 boys made the short journey to S & F United , one of their title rivals and came away with a 1-1 draw. Both teams attacked from the start and killala created some great chances most of note from J Noone and O Boyle but the half ended 0-0.It was the same again in the second half with K Lally unlucky not to give killala the lead. Finally on sixty minutes D O Boyle went on a mazy run and scored after beating several players.S & F went all out in search of the equaliser and with the final attack of the game scored from a corner.A draw was probably a fair result and leaves three teams still with chances to win the league on the last say of the season.

Killala 5 Cornboy Utd 5

Killala U.16 Boys opened their league campaign against Cornboy Utd. at Courthouse St. which saw 10 goals in an entrawing encounter. Killala went 3 – 0 up in the first 30 mins with three great strikes from strikers Mattie Keane and Simon Helly. The home team had most of the posession and created many more chances with Darragh O’ Boyle and Padraig Murphy causing the Cornboy defence bother. Killala conceeded just before half time when a misjudged corner ended up in the back of the net with the half time score left at 3-1. Cornboy came out flying in the second half and shocked the Killala defence with 4 goals in quick succession leaving the Killala team stunned. A hard fought battle on all areas of the pitch eventually led to Darrag hO’Boyle latching on to a long ball from Cian Noone and bury it into the roof of the net, closing the gap to 1 goal. Killala snatched the equalizer in the last minute with Louis Hemer quickest to react to a Padriag Murphy corner to leave the final score 5-5. Killala found it tough against a physical and organised Cornboy team and hope to improve next week when they pay a visit to Snugboro Utd.
