Brave Irish out
The Republic of Ireland women’s U17 side were defeated 2-1 by a strong Japanese side in the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup quarter-final in Trinidad on Friday night. Ireland’s World Cup hopes were dented in the 34th minute when Canadian referee, Michelle Pye gifted a penalty to Japan as Maomoto duly converted but Ireland hit back in the 53rd minute through Denise O’Sullivan (Pictured scoring) who was in sensational form for the Irish throughout. However, Japan’s top goal scorer, Yokohama was on-hand in the 67th minute to score a marvelous goal to send Japan through to the World Cup semi-final as Ireland face the long journey home after a tremendous World Cup campaign which they can be incredibly proud of.
In a lively opening to the game, Ireland started brightly and they had the games first real chance as Dora Gorman forced a save from Hirao in Japan’s goal after two minutes.
Japanese attacker, Yokohama went close for Japan in the 16th minute when she unleashed a powerful effort at Grace Moloney but the Irish keeper was well positioned to save from Japan’s top scorer. Two minutes later, Yokohama was once again causing problems in Ireland’s defence when she collected the ball deep inside the Irish half and burst through the Irish defence but her right footed shot went just wide.
Ireland went close minutes later through Siobhán Killeen and Denise O’Sullivan. In the 20th minute, Killeen showed a remarkable turn of pace to beat her defender but her shot from distance was well saved by the Japanese keeper while three minutes later, the ever dangerous Denise O’Sullivan showed great skill on the edge of the box but her effort was once again saved by the Japanese captain, Hirao.
In a pulsating period to the game, Irish defender, Megan Campbell went close with her free-kick from 30 yards but almost instantly, Japan broke down the field as Nakada fired her shot wide of goal from just 10 yards. The Japanese defence were having trouble dealing with the attacking threat of the Irish and Siobhán Killeen almost capitalised in the 33rd minute when she intercepted the ball in the middle of the field but her effort from 25 yards was again saved by the keeper.
Japan were in front a minute later when Megan Campbell was adjudged to have fouled Yokohama in Ireland’s box and Maomoto stepped up to force her spot-kick past the out-stretched Grace Moloney. Much to the amazement to the crowd at the Larry Gomes Stadium, the decision of referee, Pye was made even more controversial when her linesperson signaled for a corner-kick with no appeal coming from any Japanese players
Yokohama could have doubled Japan’s lead in the 39th minute but Grace Moloney was on-hand yet again to make a remarkable save from her stinging shot from 15 yards.
Japan finished the second half strongly and they had two glorious opportunities to extend the lead as Jennifer Byrne made a fantastic last-ditch block on Kawashima while Grace Moloney made a point blank save from Kato who had the goal at her mercy.
Ireland emerged invigorated from Noel King’s half-time team talk and they had a number of chances early on as Megan Campbell and Jessica Gleeson each went close from long range free-kicks. However, Ireland were level in the 53rd minute when Stacie Donnelly played a teasing ball over the top of Japan’s defence and as goalkeeper, Hirao and her defender, Takagi collided on the edge of the box, Denise O’Sullivan was on-hand to nip in ahead of the defence as she shot the ball into an empty net.
Japan regained the lead in the 67th minute in what was a remarkable move after Ireland came agonisingly close from a corner kick, Japan broke on a counter attack, playing in Yokohama who turned Ciara O’Brien and she unleashed an unstoppable shot from 15 yards, giving Moloney absolutely no chance.
From there on in, Ireland were on the front foot as they went in search of an elusive equaliser. Megan Campbell went close once again with a free-kick from 25 yards which was again saved by Hirao and with the introduction of Rianna Jarrett in the 70th minute, it gave Ireland an extra attacking option up front.
Ireland came agonisingly close to the equaliser in the 81st minute when Siobhán Killeen burst her way through Japan’s box and she played it to Jarrett who evaded the challenge of the defence and squared it to Donnelly on the edge of the six yard box but her shot was blocked by Hirao. Ireland continued to press for the remaining minutes of the game and Rianna Jarrett almost grabbed a sensational goal but her header from a Megan Campbell throw went just over the bar in what was the last action of the game.

Ireland set for quarter-final show-down with Japan
The Republic of Ireland women’s U17 side take on Japan in the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-final in Trinidad, tomorrow (Friday) at 12 midnight. The game will be streamed live by RTE.ie and will also be shown live on Eurosport while there will also be live text commentary available on FAI.ie.
Ireland go into the quarter-finals in superb form following their emergence from Group D as winners ahead of Brazil, Canada and Ghana. Ireland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brazil in the opening game but they got their World Cup dream back on track with two successive victories over North American Champions, Canada (1-0) and Ghana (3-0).
Japan also go into the game in confident form following two 6-0 victories over Venezuela and New Zealand respectively after their opening 4-1 loss to European Champions, Spain.
Speaking on the eve of the World Cup quarter-final clash, Republic of Ireland manager, Noel King said, ” Since our arrival at the tournament, we have been scouting and monitoring a number of teams, including Japan. We have already seen them play twice and have been looking at the dvd’s from their previous games. There is no doubt that they will be a massive test for our side as they possess a different threat to our team which we may not have encountered in the World Cup so far. They are an incredibly strong side who like to play free flowing, attacking football and after scoring 13 goals in the last three games, there’s no doubt that they will be dangerous in front of goal. At this stage of the competition, I think everyone knows the style of football that we possess, we will not be changing our system at this stage because I believe it will allow us to get at Japan both defensively and in attack. We also have a number of small knocks in the camp but hopefully the players will recover in time to face Japan,” said King.
King added, “All of the girls are extremely excited about qualifying for this stage of the competition. It is a historic moment for women’s football in Ireland and no matter what the outcome of this game, we have already made history but I know that the girls just want to go the whole way to the final at this stage, such is the confidence in the squad. Emerging from a group ahead of Brazil, Canada and Ghana was always going to be a massive task and to be honest, nobody here expected us to top the group ahead of those world class teams. Those results have given the whole group the confidence which is required at this level and I really believe that the girls are not finished just yet,” he said.

Aileens Goal shoots Irish girls to World Cup Quarter Finals
The Republic of Ireland women’s U17 side continued their historic World Cup journey with a 3-0 victory over Ghana in their final FIFA World Cup, Group D match. That result, coupled with Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Canada in the same group, means that the young ‘Girls in Green’ advance to the quarter-finals of the competition as group winners and will now meet Japan in the quarter-final on Friday (September 17) at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad.
In what was a bruising encounter, goals from Megan Campbell, Stacie Donnelly and Aileen Gilroy secured the three precious points they required to secure their progression to the next round.
Photo: Aileen Gilroy scores Ireland’s third
With just five minutes played, Ireland were ahead courtesy of a sublime free-kick from dead-ball specialist, Megan Campbell. The lively Denise O’Sullivan was hauled down on the left-wing and Campbell was on-hand to send her left-footed free-kick over the stranded keeper, Otoo and into the top corner of the net.
The front pairing of Stacie Donnelly and Denise O’Sullivan were causing the Ghanaian defence all sorts of problems early on. After 19 minutes, Reading striker, Donnelly won possession on the edge of Ghana’s box and she laid the ball off for Wilton’s Denise O’Sullivan whose shot from 15 yards out went just over the bar.
Ghana’s first attempt on goal came in the 23rd minute when Yiadom let-fly from 30 yards but her shot was comfortably saved by the ever-reliable Grace Moloney in goal.
Mid-way through the first half, Ireland were enjoying large periods of possession in key areas of the field in a patient approach to their opponents. Siobhán Killeen, who had scored in the two previous games was dangerous once again and she came close in the 28th minute when she skipped past her defender with ease on the left and from 15 yards powered her effort across goal, only to see the ball go agonisingly over the bar.
Ireland doubled their advantage in the 36th minute through Stacie Donnelly when Denise O’Sullivan caused mayhem in the Ghanaian box after she chased down her defender, Antwi in the right corner. Ghana defender, Antwi played it to her keeper, Otoo who returned to the ball to Antwi and under pressure from Denise O’Sullivan, the Ghana defender, helped it on to Stacie Donnelly who stroked the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards.
In the closing stages of the first half, Ireland were in complete control but they almost allowed Ghana back into the game in the 42nd minute when Aileen Gilroy brought down Ghana’s captain, Sesu in the box and the referee made no hesitation with awarding a penalty. Ghana midfielder, Mary Essiful put the resulting spot-kick to the left of Grace Moloney’s post, much to the relief of the Irish, who went in at the break with a two goal lead.
Ireland started the second-half strongly and came close early on through Denise O’Sullivan who was once again chasing down loose back-passes from the defence to the goalkeeper while Megan Campbell forced Otoo into a finger-tip save from a corner in the 58th minute.
In a frantic period to the game, with both sides playing free-flowing attacking football, Irish defender, Jennifer Byrne came close from a Megan Campbell throw in the 63rd minute while seconds later, Ghana’s Sumala’s effort was comfortably saved at the other end by Moloney.
Two minutes later, a wicked shot from Okyere from outside the Irish box was tipped around the post by the influential Moloney and from the resulting corner, Stacie Donnelly was on hand to clear a goal-bound effort off the line. Okyere thought she had pulled one back in the 75th minute when she challenged Moloney in the Irish box but the referee made no hesitation and ruled the goal out for fouling the Reading keeper.
Ireland wrapped up the win in the 77th minute with a wonder strike from Aileen Gilroy from nearly 30 yards out on the right wing. A pin-point ball from Jennifer Byrne found Gilroy in space and her first-time shot gave Otoo no chance as the ball nestled in the back of the net. The Killala midfielder was left shaken following her strike after a late tackle from a Ghanaian defender as she left the field to be replaced by Emma Hansberry minutes later.
Ireland finished the game strongly and held on for a historic victory which sees them top Group D ahead of Brazil, Canada and Ghana and now face the highly rated Japan at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad on Friday, September 17. Kick-off is 12.00am (Irish time)

FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup – Group D
Republic of Ireland 1-0 Canada
Siobhán Killeen (75 mins
The Republic of Ireland Women’s U17 side defeated Canada 1-0 on Thursday in the FIFA World Cup, courtesy of a stunning strike from Siobhán Killeen in the 75th minute at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad. In an epic battle with two well drilled teams fighting for their place in the quarter-finals, the Irish players dug deep to carve out a decisive victory which now puts them on top of the group.
Meanwhile, Group D of the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup looks set to go down to the wire as Ghana stunned Brazil by beating them 1-0 at the Larry Gomes Stadium. As it stands, all four teams in Group D have three points and Ireland now go into their final group game against Ghana on Monday, knowing that a victory will be enough to send them through to the World Cup quarter-finals.
n a tough battle, it was Ireland who started brightly and Irish defender, Jennifer Byrne almost scored the game’s opening goal as she headed an Aileen Gilroy corner towards goal but the Canadian defence managed to clear the ball off the line.
Canadian striker, Haisha Cantave was causing all sorts of problems for the Irish defence and her first opportunity of the game came in the 20th minute when she collected the ball in Ireland’s box but her forceful effort on goal was well saved by Grace Moloney.
Killala’s Aileen Gilroy almost scored with a spectacular effort after 28 minutes when she ran on to a Stacie Donnelly pass outside the box but her powerful strike went just over the bar.
Canada’s Cantave, will be disappointed not to have put her side in front after 34 minutes when she was allowed space for a free header in front of goal but once again Grace Moloney was well positioned to clear the danger. Four minutes later, Canada’s Caroline Beaulne came agonisingly close as she burst through the Irish cover but her left footed shot went inches wide of the post from 15 yards out.
Megan Campbell came to Ireland’s rescue in the 49th minute as the ever-dangerous Cantave broke through the Irish defence but Campbell was on-hand to clear the ball off the line and away to safety. Irish captain, Dora Gorman almost grabbed a superb goal in the 56th minute when her 25 yard shot was saved by D’Angelo in goal. One minute later, Siobhán Killeen showed a quick turn of pace to maneuver her way into Canada’s box but her goal-bound effort went straight to the keeper.
Reading’s Grace Moloney was in super form and she came to Ireland’s rescue in the 61st and 66th minute as she made two fantastic saves from Campbell and once again, Cantave. Ireland took the lead with 75 minutes on the clock when Siobhán Killeen collected the ball in her opponents box following a scramble by the defenders in an attempt to clear the ball. The Raheny midfielder showed great strength to hold off her marker before clipping the ball into the top corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.
The goal seemed to give Ireland the confidence to press further as Aileen Gilroy went agonisingly close in the 80th minute while once again, Grace Moloney pulled off another superb save from her nemesis, Cantave. In the closing stages, Ireland coolly played possession football in their opponents half as they hung on for a decisive victory which puts them on top of Group D ahead of the winner takes all clash with Ghana on Monday.

Glaucia double gives Brazil a narrow World Cup win |
||||
The Republic of Ireland women’s U17 side were defeated 2-1 by Brazil in their opening FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad on Monday evening.Brazilian striker, Glaucia scored the game’s opening goal after just four minutes before Raheny United midfielder, Siobhán Killeen scored a superb equaliser in the 58th minute. However, Glaucia was on-hand once again to regain the lead for Brazil two minutes later with a superb strike inside the box.
Ireland got off to the worst possible start and found themselves one goal behind after just four minutes. Brazilian captain Thais collected the ball on the right wing from a throw and played a neat ball into striker Glaucia in the Irish box who swiveled passed her marker and powered her right-footed shot into the back of the net from a tight angle despite the best efforts of Irish keeper Grace Moloney. The Reading keeper was called into action three minutes later when she made a superb save from close range to deny defender, Ingrid following a Brazilian corner. Ireland had their first real effort on goal in the 12th minute when Aileen Gilroy played a clever pass from a corner to Siobhán Killeen at the edge of the Brazilian box but her effort went just over the bar. Brazil should have doubled their lead in the 20th minute, but for the heroics of Irish keeper, Grace Moloney. Brazil’s Luana found herself all alone on the edge of the six yard box following a deflected shot and her powerful, goal-bound effort was spectacularly saved by Moloney who cleared the danger. While Brazil remained a constant threat in attack, they were often frail in defence and after 30 minutes, a Megan Campbell free-kick caused mayhem in their opponents box with Denise O’Sullivan and Jennifer Byrne missing the ball by inches. Moloney was once again Ireland’s saviour in the 35th minute when Brazil midfielder, Jucinara broke down the left and drilled a powerful shot towards Moloney’s near post but the Reading keeper was on hand to tip it around for a corner. Ireland started the second-half strongly and they scored the equaliser through Raheny’s Siobhán Killeen with a spectacular effort from just outside the box in the 58th minute. Killala midfielder, Aileen Gilroy broke down the right flank and cleverly delivered the ball to Killeen who was unmarked at the edge of the area and her first time shot nestled into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. Brazil however regained the lead two minutes later as Glaucia scored her second goal of the game with an audacious effort. She collected the ball directly from a corner and coolly curled it into the top corner of the net, giving Moloney no chance in goal. Irish defender, Jennifer Byrne came to Ireland’s rescue in the 67th minute when, Glaucia who was going in search of a hat-trick tricked her way past the Irish defence and she slotted the ball over the on-rushing Grace Moloney but Byrne was on-hand to head clear a certain goal. Ireland could have restored parity in the 68th minute as Dora Gorman burst through the Brazilian defence and played a neat ball to Stacie Donnelly from ten yards out but she hesitated in front of goal and her return pass to Gorman was cleared as far as Ciara Grant at the edge of the box but her powerful effort went just over the bar. Irish manager, Noel King made three changes in the closing stages as Rianna Jarrett, Claire Shine and Rebecca Kearney all came on to bolster the Irish attack but Brazil held out for the win which puts them in driving position in Group D. Ireland now have two days to regroup before they face a stiff test in the shape of North American giants, Canada who also won their opening Group D game 1-0 against Ghana at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Monday. King’s side will once again visit the Larry Gomes Stadium in Port of Spain at 9pm (Irish time) on Thursday, September 9. |
