WFAI Cup Semi Final

By admin

Killala 5 Wilton United (Cork) 2

The Killala girls qualified for the final of the WFAi cup where they will play Stella Marris FC ( Dublin ) on the 13th September at Milebush Park Castlebar, by virtue of an outstanding win against top Cork Womens league side Wilton United in Killala yesterday. The visitors settled early though and twice tested Killala keeper Emma Varley before the locals could get any sort of rhythm going. Alanna Naughton and Aoileen Collins were beginning to cause the Cork sides defenders all sorts of problems and it was no surprise when Elaine Lowther hit the back of the net on 17 minutes to give her side the lead. Killala could have gone further ahead in the next ten minutes as Aileen Gilroy, Alanna Naughton and Aoileen Collins all went close to extending the lead but it was Wilton however that grabbed one on the break through Denise O Sullivan to level the match. Just before the break Killala were ahead again when a cross from Gilroy was finished by Aoileen Collins much to the delight of the large crowd . The heavy pitch and torrential rain was now taking its toll as both teams welcomed the halftime whistle after a whirlwind first half. It was Wilton again who stared the half the brightest with their neat passing game leaving the Killala girls chasing shadows until in the 48th minute a Niamh Collins free kick out on the left was misjudged by the keeper and the homeside were 3-1 up. When her sister Aoileen scored a wonderful individual goal with 15 minutes left it looked gameover for the Cork girls but they pulled one back almost immediately as Killala seemed to loose concentration but it was Niamh Collins again who made sure of ot with a great strike from 20yds to signal the start of the celebrations. This was a fantastic team performance by Killala who were solid at the back and their attacking players were well supplemented by the strong midfield players.
